Amazon is now selling the DW-6900U-1 as DW6900-1V

As we saw with the GWM5610-1 and the DW5600E-1V being replaced at U.S. retailers with updated “U” models but keeping their old names and listings, Amazon.com has started to sell the updated DW-6900U-1 under the same DW6900-1V listing. In July, a customer reported that the watch he received had the LED backlight, and he and another customer posted pictures that showed the DW-6900U-1 with the “LED Backlight” label on the side of the display.

The DW-6900U-1 has a more power-efficient and white LED backlight instead of the blue-green EL backlight of the DW6900-1V, and it has an improved battery life of approximately five years. The DW6900-1V has traditionally been a popular model for military use with its front light button and lineage from the SEAL-associated DW-6600. Other new DW-6900 models with module 3529 such as the military-style DW6900TU-1A5 also have the LED light.

One thing to be aware of is that the DW-6900U-1 appears to have a resin buckle, as seen in the image below from casio.com/intl. Some other G-Shock models in various series also have a resin buckle with no durability issues reported, but you should be aware of this if it might bother you. We haven’t noticed a resin buckle on other DW-6900 models, and it looks like the DW-6900U-1 is the only one with it. (The non-U.S. DW-6900UB-9 has a stainless steel buckle.)

We can’t guarantee that you will receive the DW-6900U-1 from the DW6900-1V listing at Amazon, as there could still be older stock or returns in circulation. Also, this may only apply to watches “sold by Amazon.com” and not from other sellers. We expect the DW-6900U-1 to replace the DW6900-1V at other authorized U.S. retailers at some point, but casio.com/us is still showing the image and specifications of the DW6900-1V with EL backlight.
