Back in the late 2000s until now, before the DW-5000R-1A when modern G-Shock DW-5000 models were constrained to limited anniversary editions, the GW-5000 was known as the readily available origin-tribute model with a stainless steel center case and screw lock back like the original DW-5000C from 1983. This special “square” combined the classic metal interior with advanced features like Tough Solar power and Multi-Band 6 automatic time adjustment and expanded functions such as an adjustable and full auto backlight, world time, five alarms, and the ability to silence the beeping button sound. Although the GW-5000-1 was a Japan-only model, it was popular in other countries as a special import and highly regarded by fans and watch collectors. Recognizing its popularity beyond Japan, G-Shock would later release it in a few other countries after the updated GW-5000U-1 was introduced in 2021.
The black GW-5000HS-1 and white GW-5000HS-7, expected to be released in February 2025, are the first GW-5000 models since the GW-5000U-1 update and offer an origin-like face style and additional basic color options. The GW-5000HS-1 has a stealthy black style, but not quite a full blackout one, with an inverted LCD display, and the GW-5000HS-7 has a white bezel and band with a non-inverted display. The GW-5000HS-1 is reminiscent of the inverted display of the GW-5000B-1, which also launched with the GW-5000-1 in 2009 but would not go on to become a mainstay model over the years like the GW-5000-1. The GW-5000HS-7 is the first-ever white and non-black GW-5000 model.
Like previous GW-5000 models and the DW-5000R-1, these watches are made at the Yamagata Casio mother factory in Japan. The prices are listed as £279 in the U.K., and they are expected to be the same price as the GW-5000U-1 in the U.S. ($300) and Europe (299 euros).
Update: G-Shock U.S. released the GW5000HS-1 and GW5000HS-7 in February 2025 for $300 each.
Other than the more advanced module, another difference between the GW-5000 and DW-5000R is that the GW-5000 has a DLC-coated case and back cover, which results in a polished black color and offers abrasion resistance. The GW-5000-1 band is made of soft urethane and is more supple than the standard resin bands on other series, and the soft urethane band is expected but unconfirmed on the new models. They will be made with bio-based resin, according to Casio U.K., and it’s possible for soft urethane bands to be made with bio-based resin, as we’ve seen with the GBD-H2000 (gshock.casio.com). The previous GW-5000U-1 is still active in Japan, the U.S., and Europe (excluding the U.K.), but it is currently sold out in the U.S.
