Metal-covered G-Shock ‘GM’ models are now categorized by Casio as G-STEEL (outside of Japan and Europe)

The G-STEEL section at Casio’s International (Asia) website includes metal-covered GM models like the GBM-2100, GM-2100, and GM-5600.

Metal-covered G-Shock “GM” models (GM-5600, GM-2100, etc.) are now categorized under the G-STEEL line on certain regional Casio websites, excluding Japan and Europe. Not to be confused with the Full Metal category (GMW-B5000 and GM-B2100) which have a stainless steel screw-back case, G-STEEL models are known for combining stainless steel bezel parts with resin cases (or carbon fiber reinforced resin cases for newer “GST” series). G-STEEL series are also typically priced in the mid-range compared to the more expensive Full Metal models.

It makes sense for Casio to do this, as it makes it easier for customers to browse such models without having to create a whole new category for them, and those who are interested in GST models are likely to be interested in metal-covered GM ones too. It’s also possible that GM models are outpacing GST ones in popularity and sales at this point.

The individual product pages for metal-covered GM models in the affected regions now label these models as G-STEEL. Recent social media posts by Casio for the GBM-2100 have included the “#gsteel” hashtag. Also included are the GM-6900 and GM-110 series. The upcoming G-Shock GM-2110 models with a stainless steel bezel and band (and presumably a resin case) are also expected to be categorized as G-STEEL in these areas. Metal-covered women’s and unisex series like the GM-S5600, GM-S2100 and GM-S110 are not listed under G-STEEL.

The GM2100-1A is labeled as “G-STEEL” at Casio U.S. and some other countries.

It’s understandable that purists might not fully accept this, as these GM series were not originally designed as G-STEEL “GST” watches, but they do mostly fit the characteristics of the G-STEEL line, with the exception that the majority of GST series have Tough Solar power (and for now only the GBM-2100 does for the metal-covered GM models, not including the full metal GM-B2100). The Casio websites for Japan and most of Europe are not labeling or mixing the GM models with G-STEEL, and only GST models are listed under G-STEEL at those websites, with metal-covered GM models included under the Origin (5000-5600), 6900, 110, and 2100 categories. As far as our Specs Catalog goes, we plan to keep them in our Metal Covered category which also includes the women’s series.
