Authorized Casio dealer Arizona Fine Time is now selling an unexpected model: the G-Shock GX56-1. [Update: Now sold out.] This Tough Solar-powered watch is apparently the same model as the GX-56-1A, which was first released internationally in 2010. It has the same black and red color scheme as the GXW-56-1AJF which is still active and available in Japan, but the GX56-1 does not have the Multi-Band 6 radio time adjustment of the GXW-56. The GX56-1 has a price of $150 and is available at the Arizona Fine Time website (link below).
The GX-56, often informally referred to as “The King,” is designed as an extra-large (55.5 x 53.6 x 17.5 mm) and extra-rugged version of the DW-5600, with a dual-layer bezel and protected mud-resistant buttons. While the DW-5600 has a compatible band size of 145 to 205 millimeters (around 5.7 to 8.07 inches), the GX-56 has a compatible band size of 150 to 220 millimeters (around 5.9 inches to 8.66 inches). (See a comparison photo with the GW-5000 and other G-Shock watches at reddit.com/r/gshock.)
As a Tough Solar watch, the GX56-1 also has a more advanced module than the DW-5600. Functions include world time, 1/100-second stopwatch, countdown timer (range 1 minute to 24 hours), 5 daily alarms, hourly time signal, full auto EL backlight (1.5 or 3 seconds), full auto calendar, button sound on/off, power saving mode, and battery level indicator. In addition to the red buttons, the GX56-1 also has a red resin case back cover. Regarding the EL backlight, we are assuming that the GX56-1 is the same model as the GX-56-1A with module 3221 and not an updated version with module 3545, as there was no indication from Casio that an update was coming for this colorway.

Other currently active GX56 models in the U.S. include the blackout GX56BB-1 (casio.com) and the virtual-themed GX56MF-1 with the updated LED backlight module (casio.com, sold out but available at other retailers). The GX56TU-1A5 is another recent but discontinued model that offers a positive (non-inverted) display with the LED backlight.
